A COLLABORATIVE POST
WRITTEN BY BOOM BOX POST

Meet the fresh face joining our team, our new apprentice, Kyle Stockbridge! We stole a few minutes of his time for a quick Q&A - and here’s what we learned about the newest member of our crew.

What sparked your interest in sound for Television/Film?

I’d been exploring the craft of sound design and music production for almost a decade but hadn’t fully appreciated sound for film until somewhat recently. My picture editor friends pulled me into some projects for branded content and short films a few years ago which introduced me to the world of audio post. I fell in love with it and haven’t looked back.

How did you find out about the apprenticeship?

I first discovered Boom Box Post through episode 223 of the Tonebenders podcast (Building a Studio Facility From Scratch with Boom Box Post) which led me to looking into the company and finding the apprenticeship program. I highly recommend listening to that episode, really inspiring stories for DIYers.

So far, what is something new you have learned from this position?

That I need to place my mouse into the trash and fully embrace the trackball. But seriously, I’ve learned a ton from Jacob Cook and Katie Jackson just from sitting in with them the first few weeks. It’s an invaluable learning experience to sit and watch experts work in real-time. Hearing them think out loud and explain their process as they work has been eye-opening and inspiring.

What is the last movie which impressed you with sound?

I recently re watched Requiem for a Dream (2000) and forgot how stylized and effective the sound design is. Runner-up would be The Killer (2023). Anything that sound designer Ren Klyce does sounds amazing to me.

What was your favorite animated movie or television series as a child?

Movie: The Iron Giant (1999)
Series: SpongeBob SquarePants Seasons 1-3

What type of quirky sounds do you like?

Frequency shifted, time-warped, wonky synthetic sounds. Kinda anything that’s been mangled beyond recognition without sounding cheesy.

IF YOU HAD TO DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A SOUND EFFECT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I feel like the super granular time-stretched scream from Neo in The Matrix (1999) captures how I feel when I wake up every morning.

Thank you Kyle! If you are interested in applying to our 6th month apprenticeship program, please apply here. The next apprenticeship term will start at the beginning of January, 2025.
