A COLLABORATIVE POST
WRITTEN BY BOOM BOX POST

Our current apprentice, Andrew Shirey, is coming to the end of his six months with us. We took the opportunity to sit down with him for a brief Q&A to learn more about his thoughts on the Boom Box Post apprenticeship program.

What advice would you give the next apprentice?

Don’t be afraid to ask the team questions or sit in on anyone working. I was nervous at first but everyone was very sweet and it was very helpful. I learned a lot just by watching the experienced editors’ workflow and how they manage their sessions.

What was the most helpful lesson you had?

The session layout lesson. You learn the basics that flow into the rest of the lessons. If you don’t have that lesson down, you will struggle with the lessons that follow.

What was the most fun lesson you had?

The final projects were really fun. I was able to utilize everything I learned and put it all into one project. The final projects are two 30 second clips of your choosing where you strip all the sound and do a redesign of the clip. The supervisors reviewed and gave me back real world advice which was very helpful.

Do you have any future plans regarding what the sound world holds for you?

I will definitely try to keep going in the sound world. Nothing is set in stone but I am actively looking! Any audio post production—nothing specific. I am excited about how my experience here can lead and help me into other opportunities!

Outside of your actual sound design work, what’s your favorite part about working for BBP?

Picking the brains of everyone here and getting useful knowledge about not just sound but the industry as a whole
