A COLLABORATIVE POST
WRITTEN BY BOOM BOX POST

I recently sat down with one of our sound effect editors, Vivian Williams to get a better understanding of who she is and how she started her career. Vivian has been at Boom Box Post for two years and has been a sound editor for five years. As well as her sound editing, she is constantly making everyone a balloon animal for their birthday. We love having her as a part of the BBP crew.

What inspired you to choose post production sound as a career?

I’ve always been geared towards the creative. My parents got called into meetings with my teachers because I would draw hamsters with super powers on the back of all my classwork instead of actually completing it. I was constantly doing little art projects - making mini playgrounds in a shoebox, creating shadow-puppet shows, making flip-book animations, and one day I tried making a short film. Editing that film in iMovie was so much fun, that’s when I decided to pursue filmmaking (visual editing specifically) when I went to college. During that time, as a part of one of my film courses, I had to sit in while a sound editor edited all the sounds into my film. I was so amazed by the process, I decided to take all the sound classes I could! Turns out sound is way more fun than visual editing (in my very biased, but correct, opinion).

Outside of your actual sound design work, what’s your favorite part about working for BBP?

I’m torn here between the people and the snacks! Every single person that works here is so incredibly talented and so open with helping you grow. I’m amazed whenever I see anyone else’s work; I’ll never stop learning so long as I’m surrounded by these wonderful editors. That being said, the snack situation is out of this world. Fresh popcorn every day? Chips, gummy bears, trail mix and a rainbow of tea options? Fruits, bagels, cookies and ice cream???? I don’t know that any human can compete with the delicious food.

TELL US ABOUT SOME OF THE series you’VE worked on here AT BOOM BOX POST.

My main shows have been Santiago of the Seas, Ghee Happy, Hailey’s On It and Mickey Mouse Funhouse. I’m working on another show currently that’s yet to be announced, but is such a blast! Stay tuned!

What was your favorite animated series or movie as a child?

Avatar the Last Airbender. I’ve watched it through probably 20 times - I just finished another rewatch last week! I can quote it top to bottom. I love how they mix the toony with the serious. Even as the show progresses and its tone becomes more serious, the toony sound moments have their time and place.

What do you like to do outside of Boom Box Post?

I love playing board games (Wingspan is my current favorite), playing the piano and making balloon animals!

IF YOU HAD TO DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A SOUND EFFECT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

This changes on a daily basis, but today I’m feeling silly, so I feel like I’m that evil hehehehe kind of laugh.

It’s always a pleasure seeing Vivian around the office. We love having her as a part of our team!
