When we decided to take the plunge and build a brand new studio from the remnants of an old auto body shop, what started as a simple gear list quickly evolved into a studio with multiple Dolby Atmos-ready mix stages. We had the pleasure of working with the stellar team at Westlake Pro in helping us make our initial concepts into a reality. Our new Boom Box Post studio includes three Atmos mix stages, three 5.1 surround sound suites, eight production suites, and a multitude of client amenities. If you are curious how this all came to be, we highly recommend going to our friends at Westlake Pro’s website and reading their article. They dive into greater detail on their process and the gear needed to make it work!

We had so many exciting project releases and accomplishments in 2021, including new TV shows, fresh features, and awards nominations! We started new ventures, ranging from moving into our new office building at 520 S Verdugo Drive, to working on our first Dolby Atmos mixes. Last year, we accumulated two Daytime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Sound Mixing and Sound Editing for a Preschool Animated Program for Mickey Mouse Mixed-Up Adventures and Muppet Babies.
If you missed Jeff’s big announcement in his blog post Introducing Boom Box Post Verdugo, we are currently building a new facility that will be all our own! We are in the home stretch of construction of our new studio which will feature three Atmos-ready mix stages. We are hoping to complete construction in about a month, and then we will move on to fabric, wiring, and gear installation on the stages. Because this process has been fascinating to us as first-time mix stage builders, I thought I would share our progress thus far with all of you.
I am extremely excited to announce that Boom Box Post has officially broken ground on a brand new facility. Boom Box Post Verdugo will be 6,000 sq ft of state of the art post production sound space. We recently received a request to write a post on how we’ve been dealing with the global pandemic. While I am a bit worried our audience may be exhausted by COVID-19 coverage, I think it’s important to share our experience in this time with one another. With that in mind, I hope this post brings some information your way about work from home workflows as well as our unique perspective as a boutique post production studio dealing with the crisis. I’m also hoping it may spark some new conversation about how we are all dealing with this creative field while isolated from one another. So let’s dive in!
This summer, Kate and I had an opportunity to travel to the UK to visit some animation studios in Dublin and give an industry talk in London. While in Ireland, we took traveled across the country and came back with some really great recordings. We’d like to share these with you as well as the video of our talk with the Association of Motion Picture Sound (AMPS). We hope you our very first Boom Box Post travelog!
We’ve all heard the old adage: be the change you want to see in the world. Jeff and I take this responsibility extremely seriously. We may only be one small studio in Burbank, CA, but we are doing our best to aid in the visibility of women as smart, capable, and creative audio professionals. We sleep well at night knowing that we are giving opportunities to deserving individuals and we’re doing it in an environment of respect and appreciation.
So you can see that taking part of WAMCon was a natural extension of our company ethos. We could not be more proud that they asked us to be part of it.
During the first week of November, my alma mater, the DePaul University School of Music, held an 11-day music festival with numerous masterclasses, panel discussions, and concerts to commemorate the unveiling of its new Holtschneider Performance Center. I was asked to take part in the panel discussion sponsored by the Sound Recording Technology department titled Women in Audio Engineering. The panel sought to bring to light the fact that although women are a minority in music production and audio engineering (according to Women’s Audio Mission, women make up five percent of all audio professions), there are many notable women contributing in these fields.
Though I am fiercely passionate about all things animation audio (I wouldn’t be interning at Boom Box if I wasn’t), I share that zeal with another area of professional sound: Game Audio. On March 17th I boarded a Megabus and traveled up to San Francisco to attend the The Game Developers Conference, one of the the largest professional game industry events in the world. All aspects of the industry come to exhibit, network, and learn; from AAA to indie to student, all walks of life with varying experience and disciplines attend. In this talk I want to shine a light specifically on the tight-knit Game Audio community and a few of the many events that occurred.
Here a few ways in which the Game Audio community came together during GDC to educate and celebrate its communities.
