Our Nominations

Outstanding Sound Editing For an Animated Program - DuckTales

  • Supervising Sound Editor: Jeff Shiffman, MPSE

  • Dialogue Editor: Ian Howard

  • SFX Editor: Katie Maynard

  • Foley Editor: Carol Ma

This episode of DuckTales is the season finale with several intertwining storylines coming to a close. Most notably, Lunaris, leader of the ‘Planet Moon,’ intends to invade Earth to shift its orbit so that it will orbit the moon instead. Lunaris attempts to use his enormous spacecraft to push the Earth while Scrooge McDuck and the group fight back. The show is founded on the ideals of honoring the original series and taking inspiration from all preexisting material. Following suit from the show’s original creators, our team researched pre-existing characters and design to create a modern version that would align with the new show. One challenge was the creation of several entirely new spacecraft equipped with weapons of many different sizes and scales to work with. Lunaris’s ship had to be large enough to defy gravity. The various ship controls and holograms gave us the opportunity to design a signature set of digital and mechanical beeps and movements. It was unique to have such a wide array of characters in one episode, with signature sounds attached. The episode was a complex project for all crew, but an accurate depiction of the heart, adventure, and style of DuckTales.

We would like to also give a huge thank you to our clients for allowing us to be apart of this fun show!

Shoutout to: Disney TVA. Check out a portion of this episode:

Outstanding Sound Editing For an Animated Program - Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus

  • Supervising Sound Editors: Kate Finan, MPSE & Jeff Shiffman, MPSE

  • Dialogue Editor: Johnathan Hylander

  • Additional Dialogue Editor: Ian Howard

  • SFX Editors: Tess Fournier, Ben Gieschen, Greg Rubin, Mitchell Lestner, Jessey Drake, MPSE

  • Assistant Sound Editor: Ian Howard

  • Foley Editor: Carol Ma

We had a huge responsibility to the cult fanbase ofInvader Zim to bring a nostalgic soundscape fitting for the beloved 90’s series, while simultaneously amping it up to make this revival feel truly special. We certainly achieved that with our out-of-this-world editorial for Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus.

We did our research by watching episodes from the original series and talking with the creators to understand the intense, claustrophobic, and comedic nature of the sound for Invader Zim; then we got to work. We recorded a pallet of squeaks, squishes, and various other sonic necessities from balloons, door hinges, toys, mac and cheese, peanuts, etc. We paired these custom recordings with heavy design work. We made servos for Tak (Dib’s Spaceship) out of processed guitar chords we recorded. We blew robots (and hopefully audiences) away with huge custom laser blasts. We paired Zim’s dramatic movements with shotguns, chainsaw revs and, for comedy, silly squeaks. We poured every ounce of creative design work we had within us into this project and, because of that, we certainly feel the end result is exemplary.

For this one, we want to give a thank you to Nickelodeon Animation Studios and Netflix for letting us be a part of the team! We truly loved working on this movie. Please check out the trailer for it below:

Outstanding Sound Editing For a Preschool Animated Program - Ask the Storybots

  • Supervising Sound Editor: Jeff Shiffman, MPSE

  • Dialogue Editors: Xinyue Yu, Ian Howard

  • SFX Editors: Tess Fournier, MPSE, Jacob Cook

Ask The Storybots is an intensely rewarding project. Each episode answers a different question about our world, giving us the opportunity to cut something new with each story. Planets is a great example of the fun we had throughout this season. We designed a space car out of jalopies, lasers, rockets, and toasters. We used 8 bit synthesizers to custom design the professor’s projector. We made Neptune’s storms sound tumultuous and loud under the dialogue by carefully editing textures of varying frequency.

The biggest design challenge of this episode was escalating the weight of each impact throughout the planetary formation sequence. We used higher pitched sounds paired with cartoon coconut hits at the early stages to ensure plenty of room to grow in size. However, the rocks grew immense very quickly, and we, as audio post professionals, can only make our projects so loud. We were careful about our use of frequency, always saving room for growth until the very last massive impact. It was a tough challenge that we feel was accomplished successfully with skilled editorial.

Our love for this series shines through in our editorial, and we are very proud of the final product.

A big shoutout to Netflix for letting us be apart of this awesome show! Check out a clip from this episode:
